  • Checking into the secret paradise of Fiji, Savu Savu. This is not so much visited by regular tourists yet but this will soon change. New resorts are under construction. I'm so thankful for being able to visit amazing places like this and Fiji is definitely high up on my list so far in the entire Pacific. In fact, I'm questioning myself if I spent too much time in Polynesia. The friendliest people so far, and such serene and beautiful nature. And absolutely cruiser-friendly. I believe the local guy is right, and I could feel his worries for the future. I know the neighboring island also belonging to Fiji where most tourist goes is relatively destroyed by mass tourism. I'm having some issues with my main engine and took the starter out for a service. It's always something but this time managed to fix my problems.

    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Even though this is season 6 on RUclips I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

It was nice seeing Kiley's smilingly face. Do the two of you keep in contact? I hope she is well. Coming from an electrical background, I always verify electrical continuity, connections, amperage and voltages first. Starter got a nice cleaning. 👌 Thanks for sharing.

As far as anything electrical , the trouble is usually a ground wire or maybe the positive wire . I have taken so many things apart only to find out it was just a bad connection . It was easy to think it may have been the brushes since that ia a common problem with small electric motors. I hope you sorted it out and now it's working like new . Savu Savu looks beautiful as I'm sure all of Fiji is . Fixing your boat in exotic places . Well done , and such friendly people except when it comes to hitch-hicking . lol 🤟

I had a lot stolen in Fiji, even my clothes from the wash lady...really friendly people but you have to be careful. Made really good friends there and they will invite you for dinner, even some of the store clerks. Do go. But be careful who you invite on your boat and lock it up. Should you get to Vanuatu, I never had problems there.

You are not the only one. When I was there this season in October there was some serious theft and even assault of boats on those moorings. Luckily I was not affected.

What size extension was that. Starter motors always need work, on auto's, tractors, and boats, virtually anywhere you need them gotta be ready. I like to be ready for anything on my equipment and as a boater I'd want to be ready for others also. My cummins needed a 10mm 12point socket, that was a little unusual. But, I have all extensions, at least I thought I did , 1/2 3/8 and 1/4 but euro tools sets may be different ? I have a lot of metric but not ratchets and extensions that are metric ?

Why not stay in Fiji for cyclone season, lots of folk do that, either staying near Savusavu or Vuda Point marina in the SW where I left my boat last cyclone season. Savusavu is just the start. There are lots of amazing places to visit in Fiji, many people spend multiple entire seasons there. I have several videos about the places I visited in Fiji (search YT for Hugh Robertson and SVSeaChange), and this past season I even visited Duff Reef, the most amazing place of all in the north end of the Lau Group, plus the islands between Savusavu and Viti Levu, and the Yasawas in the west. Sad you seem hell bent on moving along, but by now you have surely done that. On the starter, if you want to short out the solenoid you need to put the screwdriver across the two big high-amperage terminals, not the incoming high-amperage terminal and the tiny low amperage signal terminal on the solenoid as it appeared you showing. Finally, a wise cruiser once told me, if it is an electrical problem first check all the connections! Sail on Thomas!

I think Vuda has storm surge gates at the entrance well they use to , We got in there with 2.6 draft & still had a couple of inch's under the keel at high tide , Great little spot

    Beautiful area!
I often find the problem after I have done a lot of work that didn't solve the problem.
My thinking now is to always start with the most simple things to check, then slowly work my way to difficult.

Do you usually leave the prop on the outboard on the dinghy in the water when you drag the dinghy behind you or you just forgot it? Nice video Thomas. I enjoy your honest thoughts about the places you visit. You kept saying how friendly people are in Fiji. It seems that you like Fiji even more than Tonga? Sail free

Watched this video a while ago and thought it sounded wonderful. But I read just now on Noonsite that theft and piracy have come to Savusavu. Even when the owners are on board, in a case involving sexual violence. Sad 😔

I kind of find it hard to understand because I felt really safe and comfortable there. There was a “John Wayne” sailor making lots of noise on the VHF when I was there. Not the brightest person in my opinion. Talking endlessly on CH16 that someone had tried to climb his boat, asking for police. And had a really bad attitude! Saying continuously on CH16 he had a gun, and anyone coming close to him uninvited he would just shoot. And that the person(s) trying to climb his boat are lucky not to be dead. If it’s the same timeframe and same person I would not pay much attention to it. He should maybe cut the drinking a bit.
Savu Savu is among the friendliest places and sweetest people I have met.
The locals said you don’t need to lock anything here.
Listening to this guy on VHF was nothing but embarrassing.

Depending on size but cheapest place is Fiji. Quite nice place and a fraction of the cost in French overseas territory. Vuda point Marina is where many sailors hauling out. The entrance was to shallow for my draft, if I’m not wrong 2,5M is max draft. They have capacity also for catamarans there. The downside is it is exposed to cyclones so planning is key for peace of mind. Cheers 🍻
